Among developing countries and in particular those countries affected by poverty and conflict there is the dual need to ensure ongoing humanitarian relief and assistance alongside the long term requirements of sustainable development. Interdependency exists between emergency livelihood building and the follow-on social and economic progress needed to prevent the squandering of humanitarian assistance.
The central aim of the HDP is to promote greater private sector participation in the humanitarian sector, encouraging long-term commitment to sustainable development and ongoing social and economic progress to ensure humanitarian assistance is not squandered.
Ultimately, strong commitment to sustainable development through public/private partnerships should, over time, mitigate the need for charitable aid to the benefit of local communities, reflecting the international will for sustainable development, improving infrastructure and investment in means of production to shorten the divide between rich and poor.
Bringing together the key United Nations (UN) agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the global private sector, the HDP acts as a forum for discussion of all the key issues affecting the world, across all relevant sectors.
With its long-term objective of bridging the two areas of humanitarian relief and sustainable development, the HDP differs from others in its determination to see the work carried through to its conclusion, achieving genuine rehabilitation for those areas affected as opposed to stop-gap solutions.
